If you’re a techie or gadget junkie, you’re probably doing a lot of research to help you figure out which smart watch is best for you. Smart watches are pretty new, but there are a ton of manufacturers out there to choose from, and many of them have been extensively reviewed and picked apart to help you decide what’s best for you. You probably just need a nudge in the right direction.
If you’re new to smart watches, you’re probably trying to figure out if you would even use a smart watch if you had one. Many of the people who buy smartwatches initially have those same worries, but never fear! People who have smart phones usually love them, and end up using them more than their phones.
There are a few key features you should look for, aside from price or manufacturer:
- Receiving notifications is one of the major features that all smartwatches should have.
- Controlling music playback from your wrist
- Reading and responding to text messaging
- GPS at your wrist
- Use of applications, meaning you can watch videos, play games, and even read
- The use of the phone from your smart watch
To help you get a better understanding of the options out there, we’ve compiled a list of our choices for the top 5 smart watches on the market.
1. Motorola Moto 360
The Moto 360 is one of the best models on the market for several reasons:
- It’s slick and streamlined
- Looks great on your wrist
- Thin and lightweight
- Very affordable (less than $150)
One of the things we love the most about this watch is the quality. It’s made from stainless steel, leather, and high-quality Gorilla 3 glass. It’s been regularly updated by Motorola, and like any good smart watch, it delivers notifications to your wrist. While it doesn’t have a keyboard, it does respond to your voice, track your health and fitness, distance traveled, and the calories that you burn throughout the day. You can’t connect it to Apple devices yet, but it’s great for maps, music and other apps, and you can even send smiles and other silly drawings to your friends.
2. Samsung Gear Fit Smart Watch
Another great affordable smart watch is the Samsung Gear Fit Smart Watch. It’s sleeker and more streamlined than other devices, and is also half the price of an Apple Watch. The Gear Fit looks great throughout the day (not too tacky, like some models) and works well when you’re hiking or exercising. It’s a fitness device first and a smart watch second, keeping track of a users footsteps and heart rates. It’s probably the most easy to use, functional smartwatch out there, because it doesn’t bog users down with technology, while doing the integral things that smart watches should do:
- Track notifications
- Respond to calls and texts
- GPS tracking capabilities
- Motivation tool
The Gear Fit is on the list because its affordable and meets the needs of its users. It’s not as robust as other models (with texting, video, and application functionality) but it doesn’t need to have those features be to be effective. It’s got the longest battery life of any smartwatch choice, lasting between 5-7 days between charges.
3. Apple Watch Sport 42- 38mm
The Apple Watch is one of the top selling watches on the technology market. It’s got 8 gigs of storage, but it comes at a pretty steep price, listing for over $400. For this high price tag, you get a fully functional Apple device that does pretty much anything you could ask a smart watch to do. It comes with a keyboard to send messages, but it’s so tiny that it’s hard to actually type anything. The wristband is awesome, completely conforming to fit your wrist without any metal pieces to get broken. It’s got a wide screen, and an excellent crown feature to navigate through app options.
Unfortunately, the battery life is on par with your cell phone, and you might spend a lot of time charging it up throughout the day. Users have also complained that the watch crystal is very fragile and it breaks easily and snags against their clothing. It also doesn’t provide fitness options- so you’ll still have to have your own fitness device, like a Fitbit, a Garmin, or Samsung Fit.
4. Samsung Gear S2 Smartwatch
For around $300, you can purchase a great device that does everything that an Apple Watch does but for Android devices. It’s sleek and stylish, and it comes in a wide variety of colors (including a gold model). It’s got all the apps you need, the most convenient charging systems on the market, and its far more durable than other models. Unlike the Apple Watch, it comes complete with Samsung’s fitness tracking software S Health.
5. Martian Watches Notifier Smartwatch
The Martian is our dark horse choice because of the amazing price. It costs less than $40 for anyone unsure if they’d use the functionalities of their watch alongside the use of applications. You’ll get all of your notifications, and set your vibration functions to distinguish callers. You can also filter alerts to only show messages, using a battery that lasts up to six days. The watch isn’t low quality either, it’s high quality glass, and you just have to touch it to recall your notifications, or use it to take a quick picture of your friends, making it a great value for the price.
