How to improve and get better at Halo 5 Guardians.
Halo is one of the most epic FPS games ever released on console. It spans over ten years and as the games have advanced so has the competitive scene. With Halo 5 Guardians now out and with the competition at an all time high, it is time to stand up or sit down.
This guide will cover some fundamental hints and tips so you can go shoulder to shoulder with some of the best players on the planet.
The mental game
This is probably the most important aspect of competitive play and one that gets ignored by most gamers. It is absolutely essential that you are in the right state of mind when playing competitive halo – get mad, play bad. Before you sit down and turn your XB1 on, make sure your head is clear, you’ve done everything you need to do and you can dedicate 100% of your focus on the screen and to your gameplay. You will find that you play best when you have nothing around to distract you. If you do find that you go on a losing streak, keep your calm and try to regain focus. Do not dwell on the previous game you just lost because someone got ‘lucky’ or your teamwork was poor. All top sports professionals adopt this approach and it is the only way you can ever progress. Immerse yourself in the action and constantly communicate with your team in as much detail as possible. If you are finding it difficult to regain focus and continue to lose and get frustrated, take a 15 minute break. Make yourself a drink or have something to eat during the break. I guarantee this method does work and can make the difference between losing all your games in an evening or winning.
Practice practice practice
Very few people are born who have enough skill to not practice. 95% practice, 5% natural talent. If you ask any professional Halo player ‘what is the best way to improve?’ they will say practice. If you are windmilling your BR around someone’s head and can not get clean 4 shot perfect kills, you will need to practice. Now there are many many aspects to Halo gameplay, you have abilities, map knowledge, map movement, jumps, weapon locations, grenades and much more. Do not try and boil the ocean, you have to breakdown all of this and focus on one thing at a time. If you find you are missing shots, download the may variant ‘Octagon’ and warm up on this with your teammates before heading to matchmaking. If you need to learn callouts, go online, research and learn. If you need to work on your movement, head to a custom game and spend time practicing and learning new ways to move around the map. One of the best things about Halo 5 is the jumps, there are so many! A lot of the jumps are technical and will take time to learn and master as they utilise the different abilities such as stabilise and thrust.
In previous Halo’s such as Halo 2 & 3, individual skill counted for a lot. With Halo 5, individual skill is of course very important and every player should always be looking to improve, but the emphasis has shifted to teamwork. The weapons are too accurate and players are too easy to kill for individual skill to make the difference it did in previous Halo’s. Your communication with your team will be critical in determining your success in competitive Halo. It is paramount that you learn the callouts to a very refined level, so your team can mentally picture exactly where the enemy player is and what he can see. If you have not learnt all the callouts for each map, this is where you need to start. After a while, it will become second nature. Currently the Halo World Championships are underway and if you head over to www.twitch.tv, you can see the best teams in the world play and watch the way they communicate.
Halo 5 is jam packed with Spartan abilities – thrust, slide, ground pound, stabilise, Spartan charge and many more. It is important to practice and experience situations over and over again. You can then review what you decision you made and think if you could have chosen a different action to change the outcome. A top tip is to thrust mid gunfight, regardless of if you are winning or losing. This is a technique adopted by high skilled players and can easily turn the tide in a losing battle.
343 Industries have been extremely generous and created a huge array of weaponry for us to use. Picking the right weapon in the right situation will determine the outcome, it is as simple as that. It is recommended to experiment with all the weapons and discover which works best for you based on your play style. I personally endorse the plasma pistol, it is devastating. As soon as you lock onto a target and the aim guide turns red, you are almost guaranteed to hit and can easily finish with a pistol shot to the head. Another great weapon is the storm rifle. This is far superior to the assault rifle and kills almost instantly. Just be sure to pulse the trigger to stop the rifle overheating.
If you play solo or with randoms, you will find it very difficult to improve your teamwork. Most of the time random players are in party chat and do not talk. Also, random players do what they want to. They will not be listening to your callouts and focusing on helping you and the team win. It is essential that you find a team of regular players who you get along with on a personal level and work well as a team. With time and practice, you will soon learn how each other plays and your strengths and weaknesses.
